HARTFORD CITY, Ind. – A Hartford City woman and a child were injured Wednesday afternoon when their car collided nearly head-on with a semi-tractor on Ind. 18.

According to Blackford County Sheriff Jeff Sones, a PT Cruiser driven by Jestine Hayworth, 24, of Hartford City, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of the state highway, east of Blackford County Road 100-E, when the collision occurred about 2:35 p.m.

A witness to the crash told deputies she honked her vehicle’s horn in a bid to alert Hayworth.

The driver of the westbound semi, 73-year-old Buddy Hayes of Huntington, tried to avoid the collision, the sheriff said, but his vehicle collided nearly head-on with the car in the westbound lane.

Hayworth was taken by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie and was in stable condition, Sones said. The child was taken by ambulance to IU Health Blackford Community Hospital, then flown by medical hospital to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Hayes was not injured.

The sheriff’s department is continuing to investigate the crash. The results of toxicology tests are pending.

In addition to the sheriff’s office, Montpelier police and firefighters, Hartford City Fire/Rescue and IU Health Blackford Community Hospital EMS responded to the call.
