Capt. George Sheridan with the Delaware County Sheriff's Office dive team prepares to search a retention pond along Delaware County Road 500-W Sunday morning after a car went into the water early that morning.

YORKTOWN, Ind. — Divers and emergency responders retrieved a car and the body of a young Muncie man from a pond west of Muncie early Sunday morning.

Crews were called around 3 a.m. Sunday on reports a car had hit a pole and gone into a retention pond near Delaware County Road 500-W, south of Ind. 332. The car was found in the water but with no one inside it, according to Delaware County Coroner Scott Hahn.

The Delaware County sheriff's dive team was brought in, and found the body of Darrion Lamonte Johnson, 20, in the water.

Speed appeared to have been a factor in the accident, which also blew out a transformer when the vehicle hit the utility pole, according to Hahn. Airbags had deployed in the car and the seat belt was undone, but investigators could not immediately tell whether Johnson had been wearing the seat belt or unfastened it, or how he came to be found outside the car, Hahn added.

Johnson appeared to have been the only occupant of the car at the time of the crash.

Cause of death had not been determined Sunday morning; an autopsy will be done on Monday.

The Yorktown Police Department was in charge of the scene at C.R. 500-W and West Ashford Lane, agencies assisting included the Delaware County Sheriff's Office — including the dive team and accident team — Yorktown Fire Department, Department of Natural Resources, Emergency Medical Service and Delaware County Emergency Management.
