9 students taken to hospital after Muncie bus crash

A Muncie school bus collided with a van traveling the wrong way down Elm Street on Monday morning.

MUNCIE -- Nine students from East Washington Academy were examined at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital on Monday morning after their school bus was involved in a crash in downtown Muncie.

Muncie Community Schools spokesperson Ana Pichardo said the students were taken to the hospital as a precaution, They had been treated and sent home by 10:30 a.m.

The accident was reported on East Washington Street near Meeks Mortuary at 8:09 a.m.

Muncie police Sgt. Mike Engle said the bus, traveling eastbound on Washington Street, struck a southbound van that was traveling the wrong way on Elm Street.

The van driver - Kristina Young, 30, was also taken to the hospital for treatment of cuts. She was cited for driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

The school bus driver, Kerry D. Quire, 45, was not injured.
