MUNCIE – Ten dogs rescued from a southern Delaware County property on Thursday were “adjusting well” on Friday at a local kennel, Muncie Animal Shelter Director Phil Peckinpaugh said.

Peckinpaugh said the dogs – beagles and cane corso mastiffs – were either living in standing water or on piles of feces, and did not have access to food or fresh water. The canines were on a property in the 19300 block of East County Line Road, just north of the Delaware-Henry County line.

Six other dogs, all beagles, were found dead on the property.

Deputy Joe Krupa, public information officer for the Delaware County sheriff’s department, said efforts to contact the property’s owner were continuing.

Peckinpaugh said he believed the state veternarian would examine the surviving dogs on Sunday.

On Monday, autopsies on the deceased dogs will be conducted at Purdue University, he said.
