  • A Muncie teenager was arrested this week on charges stemming from a July homicide.
  • Darius Covington, 17, was preliminarily charged with attempted murder and robbery.
  • Christian Orebaugh, 18, was fatally shot in his West 23rd Street home on July 2.

MUNCIE — One Muncie teenager has been arrested in connection with the July 2 slaying of another.

Darius Anthony Covington, 17, was being held without bond Thursday in the Delaware County jail, preliminarily charged with attempted murder and robbery.

A probable cause affidavit in the case was not immediately available. However, Delaware County Prosecutor Jeffrey Arnold confirmed Thursday the arrest stemmed from the July 2 slaying of 18-year-old Christian Michael Orebaugh, who was shot to death in his West 23rd Street home.

Covington was apparently transferred from the county's juvenile detention center to the jail on Wednesday afternoon. The charges against him would result in an automatic transfer from juvenile to adult jurisdiction.

On July 14, police investigating the Orebaugh slaying arrested another Muncie teenager — William C. Balfour III, 16 — on a preliminary charge of murder.

Four days later, however, Balfour was transferred to the juvenile detention center, where he was being held on allegations unrelated to the Orebaugh killing. Most juvenile court proceedings are not open to the public.

Prosecutors said at the time they had requested further investigation before filing formal charges.

Asked Thursday if Balfour remained a suspect in the homicide case, Arnold said, "I can't comment on that."

An affidavit filed in that case reflected two armed teenagers entered Orebaugh's house "before the shot was fired."

Authorities said the victim died as a result of a single gunshot wound in the torso.
