MUNCIE – Delaware County Sheriff Mike Scroggins' death was the result of a heart attack, an Ohio coroner said Wednesday.

Scroggins, 52, died May 15 at the home of a friend in Elyria, Ohio. A few days earlier, the sheriff had undergone shoulder surgery at a nearby hospital.

The Lorain County, Ohio, coroner's office this week completed its investigation of Scroggins' unexpected passing, ruling the sheriff died as the result of a "sudden cardiac arrest."

Frank Miller, a physician and that county's chief deputy coroner, said a problem with heart rhythm was likely a key factor in the sudden death.

Miller said the sheriff had contended with health issues that included high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels.

Scroggins was elected sheriff in 2010 and won re-election last year.

Delaware County Democratic precinct officials elected Ray Dudley to complete Scroggins' term, which runs through December 2018.

In 2002, Scroggin's father, former Delaware County Coroner Glenn Scroggins, died of a sudden heart ailment. He was 61.
